In 1999, severe erosion at a site on the Poultney River was greatly impacting the property of Green Mountain College, including a major drinking water well. The District assisted by installing rip rap along this site on the river, and planting willows to help stabilize the bank.

A second restoration project was done a half mile downstream of this site four years later, at another area of serious erosion. However, this time a new bioengineering method was used in an attempt to more gently absorb the energy of the river against the bank, and hopefully decreasing any further erosion downstream by diverted energy. In this case, seven log vanes were installed along the western bank of the river, and revetments were installed with the help of a summer VT Youth Conservation Corps crew. This project was a bi-state effort, since the western bank is in the state of New York.

Since installation, the vanes have stayed in place despite very high water events, and eliminated erosion from this site. An educational sign was installed near here to help explain the different types of river restoration options

Poultney/Castleton River Water Quality Implementation Project

Funding from the Environmental Protection Agency has recently been received to help implement high priority projects on the Poultney and Castleton rivers and their tributaries. This will include working with landowners on riparian plantings, working with agricultural producers on nutrient management, and providing general public information about ways to help improve water quality. This project will begin this fall and continue for a year.
